Me Gusta: Taco Barrio Hits All the Right Spots

Dubai has its fair share of restaurants serving cuisines from all across the world but there was always a gaping void when it came to authentic Mexican food, particularly a classic Mexican taqueria (taco stand). The recently-opened Taco Barrio in Dubai Silicon Oasis aims to fill that gap and I was pretty psyched to be one of the first people to try their delicious food out!

Ambience: The old-school Mexican vibe was right on-point at Taco Barrio with wooden tables, light bulbs hanging from the tin-foil ceiling and evocative Latin imagery scattered across the restaurant. The whole restaurant being centered around the open-kitchen helped add to the taqueria feel too. The Cantin Flas movie playing in the background, the retro Mexican music and the colorful plastic plates were a thoughtful touch to the entire ambience – my dining partner, who was of Mexican origin, claimed that she felt she was right back at home!

What we had: We started off with the quintessential mix of nachos, guacamole and salsa sauces – the nachos were crispy and fresh while the guacamole was rich and creamy – easily the best I’ve ever tried even when compared to high-end Mexican fares such as La Tablita. For the main course, we had an Alambre Del Barrio (the real Mexican name for fajitas) which was beef bacon, bell pepper, onion and cheese mixed with beef steak which are usually paired with warm corn tortillas – the beef was juicy and tender and the whole dish was miles ahead of Tex Mex and Chilli’s conventional fajitas. Desserts got even better, with the sweet, walnut-topped Natillas (Mexican custard) being a delectable finish to the main course.  The Mexican jelly mashup that I tried was a bit off the mark though, with the jelly tasting bland and watery. And finally, for the drinks, the Horchatas (rice milk with cinnamon) was a great way to cool off coupled with the right amount of sweetness and at just 10 AED was great value for money too!

Service: Our server was courteous, friendly and extremely passionate about Mexican food as well!

Must-haves: Guacamole (AED 35), Alambres Del Barrio (AED 49), Horchatas (AED 10)

Verdict: A great place to have authentic Mexican food with a welcoming ambiance and friendly service – it’s definitely worth a drive to the dull Silicon Oasis neighborhood where it’s located.
