I’m not a huge fan of afternoon teas, but there’s no denying that they are popping up all across Dubai’s culinary scene and are being offered outside of 5-star hotels too. Aubaine’s latest Afternoon Tea (AED 120), which I was invited to sample recently, might have just changed my mind about them.
Ambiance: Classy and chic are the first things that come to mind when you visit the French restaurant’s CityWalk branch. I love the gilded mirrors, the artifical flowers adoring the white walls and the wooden floors – they make you feel like you’ve walked straight into a cafe on a European high street.
What we had: The Afternoon Tea included Confit Duck Parcel, Mini Lobster Brioche, Salmon Rillete on Crostini and Superfood salad in lettuce cap for the savoury section and Mini Tarte, Mini Fruit Tart, Mini Profiterole, Mini Madeleine and Mini Financier for the sweet section coupled with a choice of coffee or tea for two. Being a seafood lover, I naturally enjoyed the Salmon Rillete on Crostini – the salmon paste went well with the crisp crostini bread. The Superfood Salad was a cool addition too – the pomegrante seeds made it even more delicious!
Aubaine’s pastries were obviously good as well, so good that they surpassed their French rivals Angelina and La Duree (in the context of Dubai) – my favourites were the Mini Tarte and Mini Profiterole: I loved the fresh strawberry jam in the Tarte and the chocolate filling in the Profiterole is something I’m still craving. The secret to their fresh-tasting pastries, according to their Pastry Chef, was the emphasis that Aubaine places on locally-sourced ingredients and creating its pastries in Dubai itself from start to finish (rather than importing the dough and raw materials from Europe as their rivals do).
Verdict: Aubaine takes the Afternoon Tea concept to a whole other level with it’s fresh and delicious canapes and pastries – it’s a must-visit for anyone who loves bite-sized food with great coffee or tea on the side!
