The Guide Every Amateur Dune-Basher Needs To Read

When I started off dune bashing, I could never really find any online advice or tips – so I’ve decided to create a list of my own that could come in handy if you ever decide to venture into the desert – you should definitely give it a shot in this beautiful weather!

1. Always go with a full tank of petrol: going dune-bashing radically reduces your fuel economy and it’s better to be safe than sorry

2. Bring your 4-wheel-drive car’s tyre pressure down to 10-15 PSI (Depending on the terrain): it’s physics: flatter tyres mean more surface area and lower chances of getting stuck – a tyre gauge will come in handy here in helping you measure your car’s PSI.

3. Know the capabilities of your vehicle. Only attempt dunes that you are comfortable with.

4. Gravity is your friend and always attack dunes with sufficient momentum: make generous use of the throttle while climbing a dune

5. Always park on a downward sloping dune, it’s going to make pushing off a lot easier.

6. If it’s your first or second time trying it out, do avoid driving at night

7. Make sure you’re going with another SUV in tow (no pun intended): even the most experienced of dune-bashers can get awkwardly stuck in the middle

8. Make sure to carry along a good quality tow rope, you never know when it will come in handy.

9. If you do get stuck, stay calm and analyze the situation: first, try reversing while moving the steering wheel from side to side. If that doesn’t work, then ask your passengers to shovel the excess sand out from whichever point your car is stuck in and try reversing again. If all else fails, get towed to safety by another car.

10. The best place for new desert drivers to head is Lehbab (on the Dubai-Hatta Road) as you can always find experienced drivers to help you if you’re stuck.

11. Most of all, learn to let go and have (safe) fun, the best way to learn is through experience.
