Taste of Italy by Heinz Beck

There are several casual dining Italian restaurants dotted across Dubai and Taste of Italy has always been conspicuous at a corner of Galleria Mall- I was recently invited to their “Italian Street Feast” event and treated to a wholesome range of well-known Italian delicacies.

Ambiance: The marble tables, black chairs and indoor plants added to an ambiance that was understated and welcoming. The open-kitchen counters and the range of Italian products on display were a wonderful nod to the eateries in Italy, which usually combine dining and grocery shopping

What we had: As part of their Italian Street Feast (AED 120), I was treated to a range of starters including Potato Chips, Cheese Ravioli and Arrosticini (grilled mutton skewers)  , mains including calzones and pizzas and a Brioche Con Gelato for dessert.

Starters: The Cheese Ravioli was delicious with just the right amount of filling while the Potato Chips weren’t much to brag about. The Arrosticini was a disappointment though with the mutton being charred and overcooked.

Mains: The Pizza de Funghi (Mushroom Pizza) and Mushroom and Cheese Calzone were fluffy, fresh and doughy – I haven’t had such a great calzone since my last visit to Rome! Most of the ingredients are directly sourced from Italy and that was clearly evident in the  brilliant quality of their food.

Dessert: The Italian take on the ice cream sandwich – the Brioche Con Gelato was the ideal end to my meal. The gelato flavor I chose was the tangy Raspberry – it was light on the palette with just a sufficient shot of sweetness. Add to that the soft texture of the brioche buns and the dessert is a complete winner.

Service: The service seemed extremely busy and was a bit slow due to the Thursday night crowd – they were quite knowledgeable about the dishes on offer, though

Highs: Great-quality Italian food in a homely atmosphere – their Street Feast is quite a bargain too for such a hearty meal!

Lows: Exceptional restaurants such as Slider Station and Tasha’s in the same vicinity take away its shine – skip out on their lamb skewers as well.

Verdict: If you’re looking for simple, authentic Italian food in a welcoming setting around Jumeirah, do keep Taste of Italy on your list.
