SpiceKlub Dubai: Veggie Delight

Located in a quaint corner of Bur Dubai, SpiceKlub is a vegetarian serving classic Indian cuisine with a twist. I’ll be honest, I had my inhibitions about having a completely vegetarian three-course meal from an Indian restaurant, as an all-out carnivore.

Ambiance: The decor is definitely more upmarket than the price would suggest: I loved the Indian motifs and use of colors throughout the restaurant that made it very ‘gram-worthy. Don’t miss out on talking a picture of their Rangoli-inspired wall when you head there!

Pav Bhaji Fondue, Deconstructed Dahi Vada and Mango on the Rocks

What we had: Starters: Pav Bhaji Fondue, Palak Cheese Cigars, Cheese Papad, Deconstructed Dahi Vada, Gola Danda

Mains: Paneer Tikka, Malai Kofta, Veg Makhanwala

Desserts: Flower Pot, Bubbling Kulfi

We started off with a bang with street food-inspired starters that were all heavy on flavour and spice with a unique twist to each Indian staple. My favourite from the bunch had to be the Pav Bhaji Fondue – the spicy tomato fondue and the bread were perfect complements! The Palak (spinach) Cheese Cigars were an explosion of flavors too with the fritters having just the right amount of crunch. The addition of the super-sweet Gola Danda (the Indian version of popsicles) and a yogurt concoction called Mango On The Rocks in the starters was a welcome addition to our spicy palette too.

As for the mains, the paneer tikka was great alternative to the chicken version with its creamy taste and texture. I wasn’t a fan of their gravy-based Malai Kofta and Veg Makhanwala though as the gravy was too creamy in my opinion and wasn’t as fresh as I’d liked.

The dessert were an amazing culinary experience starting with the Flower Pot – a hard chocolate pot with a saffron mousse center – and the Bubbling Kulfi – Indian ice cream mixed with liquid nitrogen with an assortment of sweet toppings such as rose caviar. Both of them have to be one of the finest Indian desserts I’ve tried in Dubai and were top-notch in terms of taste, texture and quality.

Service: The servers were courteous and had oodles of knowledge about all of the dishes on offer.

Highs: Fascinating decor, an impressive selection of starters and desserts

Lows: Might not appeal to non-vegeterians, a few lackluster mains

Verdict: A worthwhile addition to the various Indian restaurants dotting Bur Dubai, SpiceKlub is definitely worth a visit for its innovative set of vegetarian starters and desserts
