A timepiece that came my way recently was Bernhard H Mayer’s latest – the Exemplar – limited to just 2,000 pieces and coming in a choice of either a stainless steel or rose-gold bezel.
Look: At first glance, the watch screams Hublot especially in the rose-gold guise with its black hexagonal bezel. The black rubber strap and the black dial with rose-gold hands and white inserts just drive the Hublot feel home. Take the Hublot resemblance out, however, and this is a very handsome watch which strikes the right balance between being rugged and sophisticated. As with most Bernhand H. Mayers, the intricate caseback is a feature most watch aficionados would really appreciate.
Wear-ability: The rugged feel of the watch translates to its weight as well: the watch is quite heavy on the wrist and is only a match for people who like weighty watches. The rubber strap is comfortable to wear for hours at end but the bulky feel of the watch prevent it from being an everyday wear. The timepiece is best for a night out, not a day at the office. At a retail price of 3000 USD and above, its quite pricey, though.
Highs: Rugged yet sophisticated
Lows: Weighty feel, high price tag
Verdict: If you want the design and look of a Hublot at half the price but without a buying an embarrassing imitation, you’d love the Exemplar. However, the bulky feel of the watch really put me off and prevent it from being a daily wear.
